ers because it is applied all around the bottle or jar and one can achieve so much text or information with one print pass. Tampo-print is used if the client wants just a short logo or has a special and unusual shape to the con- tainer which means that screen print- ing cannot be used. A silicone rubber pad on a type of printing plate picks up the coloured cliché in the shape of the motif and presses it against the pack. If tampo- printing is not possible then UV print- ing offers an alternative. The ink is applied to the outer sur- face of the bottle and then hardened by UV light. This method can be used with almost any container material. Particularly delicate or fine decora- tion, or perhaps golden text and fine lines, are usually applied by hot foil stamping. Here a very bright gloss ef- fect is achieved that can be seen even in dark ink. Nevertheless, economically the use of this system is usually restricted to quantities of 10,000 and more. But the system does work with inks and not just precious metals. All of the inks used will give the package a special, high class gloss. Clearly a more economical alterna- tive is the use of labels, which can be produced in very small quantities and will stick almost anywhere. For exam- ple, from a stock of 1,000 labels one can do various test runs to find out which version sells best before order- ing large quantities. PACKAGING PRODUCTION photos:Gerschon screwing open and closed, to create tiny particles of paint or ink which would contaminate the product. The key in plastic packaging, such as bottles, jars and caps, is lacquering, which is also possible in any colour, such as the Pantone or RAL colour ranges. Lacquered plastic packaging is particular suitable for small runs from about 300 upwards. With PE plastic bottles it is also possible to achieve a soft-touch effect with the lacquering. Then the bottle or jar does not feel slippery or glossy, but has a better grip feel, rather like velvet fabric. Gold and silver are often used in a vapour metallisation technique. The bottle or jar is set in an environment of the smallest gold or silver particles and then dried. It is particularly the glowing gold and silver closures that are always dampened. Clearly more durable is galvanising. Here gold and silver work like genuine metal. Gal- vanising is one of the highest (and most expensive) decorative proce- dures, such as is used to finish elegant bathroom fittings. After applying an overall colour the next stage is applying the print to the primary packaging container. The fol- lowing types of printing are used here: screen printing, tampo-print, UV print- ing, or hot foil stamping. Flowers, stars, company logos, signatures – they can all be considered and are printable. If the label is just one millime- tre off its correct position the client will always have the feeling that something isn’t right with the product. “Sleeves” are a possibility where the packaging is given a kind of second skin. This sys- tem though, is only economically suit- able for large quantities. Rectangular shapes are becoming popular Renate Radizi Managing Director of R.
