10 COSSMA 4I2015 FOCUS: BODY CARE INGREDIENTS I n recent years, transparent sun products such as alcoholic sun sprays or even sun gels have become increasingly popular with consumers, especially children and men. In com- parison to traditional emulsions, they are particularly easy to spread on the skin and leave a nearly imperceptible film. The stickiness of traditional sun- screen products often assessed by con- sumers is especially low in this app- lication form. However, it is much harder to achieve a high or very high sun protec- tion factor (SPF) within alcoholic trans- parent sun sprays or gels, as UV-ab- sorbing pigments such as titanium dioxide are not suitable for these ap- plication forms. In addition to this, it is quite challenging to achieve long-last- ing water-resistance and rub-off pro- tection for transparent sun care prod- ucts. Both achieving high SPF and de- livering water resistance in the popular product forms, including alcohol- based aerosol sprays and non-aerosol pump sprays, have created new chal- lenges for formulating chemists. For- mulators are also striving to enhance product performance without increas- ing the level of active ingredients in the final product.
