PACKAGING NEWS PRODUCTION Prize-winning carton packaging Pro Carton ECMA Award 2014 I Among this year’s winners Fer- nanda Brandao* re-sub- mitted the retail carton that reflected the bottle shape of the Cura brand with the same prismatic shape, corners, angles and proportions. Even the colour had to suit that of the bottle. It took a to- tal of six months to devel- op the asymmetric shape of the carton. The shape is reminiscent of an uncut amethyst and together with the clever use of holographs it clearly stands out among the other packaging on the store shelf. The special design of the carton means that it can be sup- plied flat, and erected and filled automatically. Winner in the beauty & cosmetics category was Pleats Please L’Élixir from Beauté Prestige International (BPI)**. The perfume line from Issey Miyake, Pleats Please, is totally devoted to pleats: the bottle is wrapped in pleats, the bottle top is designed like pleated material and the carton is not only printed with pleated folds but also embossed so that the folds on the product and the packaging can be felt. The delicate emboss- ing on the carton is a real attention-getter. The finish with multiple emboss- ing and matt lacquer calls for a great deal of experience and technical precision. The brand emblem, the image of a filigree blossom, runs across the front of the carton and down one side. All partners in the packaging supply chain are invited to enter the Award (again) by May 21st 2015. *produced by Carl Edelmann on board from Stora Enso www.edelmann.de www.storaenso.com **carton produced by CD Cartondruck on board from Sappi www.cartondruck.com www.sappi.com NEWS Packaging It took 6 months to develop the asymmetric design The carton is not only printed with pleats but the folds can also be felt across the embossing The winners of the aerosol can awards 2014 Aerobal I An international panel of judges composed of journalists from the world’s most important trade magazines selected the winners of this year’s awards. The winner in the category covering cans already on the mar- ket was a can by the German producer Tubex for Dove, with a photo-realistic image of a pomegranate and fine colour nu- ances on the pips, all on characteristically shaped aluminium. Alongside its brilliant look the innovative character of the can is noticed only at a second glance – the 125 ml product is filled with a deo concentrate and less propellant which allows savings in material, weight and transport costs, but just as many active uses as a 250 ml can. This is a good ex- ample of an environmen- tally friendly and sustain- able pack. First prize in the proto- type catego- ry went to Ball Aerocan Europe in France. Thanks to an innovative printing process the manufacturer can now use glossy and matt decoration next to each other so that each individual colour can be designed to be matt or glossy. This also makes it possible to distinguish optically and haptically between the individual ar- eas of the can. *COSSMA editor Angelika Meiss is a member of the judging panel www.aerobal.org www.tubex.de www.aerocan.eu www.naturkosmetik-verlag.de [ ]Berlin, Germany 06.10. - 07.10. 2015 www.naturkosmetik-branchenkongress.de For more information see: A joint venture of leading market research companies COSSMA 11I2014 39 Photo-realistic reproduction of a pomegranate The combination of gloss and matt decoration on the same can makes it easier to distinguish optically and haptically between the individual areas of the can photos:ProCarton photos:Aerobal COS1411_39_News_Packaging_GB_COS1409_32_News_Packaging_D 27.10.14 08:38 Seite 39
